Exterior Update

It’s always good to look back and see where we’ve been.  I figured I’d pull together some of the photos of the front of the house so you all can see the progress.  I think it largely speaks for itself:

So, after taking down the Christmas lights, we re-roofed the main house and painted the stucco grey.  We also put new cedar fascia boards on both the 1st and 2nd floor eaves.  I put some landscaping bricks around the front and planted some glossy chokeberry bushes I got from work.  After that I scraped the old, chipping paint off the window and door trim, re-primed and then painted all of it dark green.  I also took out the old, accidentally painted outer basement windows, put in window wells and well-covers on.  Paul’s mom helped me repaint the stucco scallops along the ground so the white really pops.  Next I took off all six storm windows, cleaned them and spray-painted them white.  Most recently, we replaced the screen door.  Not too bad!

Still lots to do, but I definitely feel like this has been one of the more impressive transformations thus far.

Window Treatment

One of the projects that has been on our list for a significant amount of time is the replacement of 11 of our windows, and the addition of two windows.

West kitchen window as of last year.

Last May, we bought all 13 windows, thinking we would get them installed in August or September.  However, roofing ended up taking more than a month longer than anticipated, and the boxes of windows ended up sitting in the garage for the rest of the year. Luckily, because of the exceptionally mild winter, we were able to get three replaced in January.  I’d never seen a whole window installed before, so I thought I would share the process of putting in the west kitchen window.

Photo of the Week: Sign of (Early) Spring

Today was March 13.  This is a relevant piece of information that changes this photo from “normal, everyday evening at the house” to a Photo of the Week.  Because look what I picked up today:

Yup, that’s a paint roller.  I started back up painting the exterior of the house.  In mid-March. In Minnesota. The low tonight is 49°F, and the high tomorrow will be in the 70s.  How great is that?  Since the next several days are supposed to stay consistently above 35°F, I’m thinking I may even be able to finish the north side of the house before we get to April.

While, to Minnesotans, 2010-2011 was the winter of Snowmageddon, I think this past winter will be remembered as the winter that never was.  In my neck of the woods, there was never as much as six inches of snow on the ground at one time, all winter (we know this because our favorite cross-country ski trail isn’t groomed until there is six inches to pack, and we went skiing exactly zero times).  I have to admit that I am considerable concerned about the potential drought situation this has caused, I can’t help but enjoy the fact that we have been able to get so much more done because of our non-wintery conditions.  As I mentioned in my last post, we got three windows put in during January.  So here’s to capitalizing on weather anomalies! And not having to wear a coat in March. Unheard of.

Waking up from Blog Hibernation

Well, hello!  Long time no blog, I suppose the saying goes.  There has been a lot of upheaval for the two of us since our last blog post, and all good things.  In October, my coworker put in her two-weeks notice.  After a two-and-a-half month long application process, I was promoted to her position, bringing me up to full-time permanent status after spending three years as a part-time temporary employee.  Then in January, Paul’s supervisor put in his two-week’s notice, leading to Paul being offered the promotion (he, of course, accepted), and starting his new job just last week. So big changes in the TC Farmhouse household!  We are very thankful for the financial stability these changes will provide, helping us get closer to achieving our goals on the house.

We are just a few weeks past our one year anniversary of owning this house .  Kind of crazy, huh?  So much has happened in the past year, I thought I’d do a bit of a retrospective as a way to get back into the swing of blogging again.  Let’s take a journey to the past and see where it all started — and where we are now.
